Whenever an email has not been delivered to a recipient, it is said to have bounced. However, there are many reasons why your emails could bounce. The intended recipient do not receive the massage when an email bounces. This means that the time and the hard work employed in crafting such massages are wasted. Email bounces will be there in email marketing campaign but should be eliminated.
Since bounces are usually not the same marketers should know what generate such bounces. Although some email bounces will occur because of mistakes done by the sender, there are bounces that arise because of networks or internet service provider. In most cases, bounced emails occur due to a problem with the recipient account or the email could be blocked from the recipient server. The sender usually receives a message from the recipient server in case the message bounces.
Bounces are usually not the same. When the contact email address has a temporary problem, the bounce is said to be a soft bounce. Although such an email might be delayed, it is not always stopped. Normally, the server keeps trying to send the email several times for some hours or even days. If the retry period has elapsed without successful delivery of the email, such an email is considered undeliverable.
Hard bounce, on the other hand, occurs if the message is considered permanently undeliverable. If a certain email address generates hard bounce, you should remove it from your database to avoid sending more email to such a recipient.
You can, however, eliminate the bounce cases or minimize email bounce rate. The following are some of the ways to reduce email bounce rate.
1. Remove unnecessary contacts.
Bounce rate can be reduced by examining the contact list and doing a cleanup. Check for emails that have not been correctly formulated. For instance, get rid of the email addresses that lack an @ symbol. Although there is software that can do that automatically, a human eye would do no harm.
2. Begin with good sign-ups.
For you to send an email, you must have a contact. One way to have the contacts is by using sign-up forms or web form. Through the forms, you get people to fill in some information and email addresses.
3. Send confirmation emails.
When a person signs to your campaign, you may send a message for confirmation. The email should contain a link for subscription confirmation. This helps to know whether you can send an email or not. When you get hard bounces, the email addresses should be removed immediately.
You would be frustrated when you keep getting bounced emails. By using simple ways, however, bounced emails can be eliminated.
